Hypatia was born in Alexandria, Egypt, in 350 AD. Her father, Theon, was a renowned mathematician and astronomer, and he taught his daughter everything he knew. Hypatia quickly became a brilliant scholar, and she soon surpassed her father in both mathematics and astronomy.
In 400 AD, Hypatia became the head of the Neoplatonic school in Alexandria. She was the first woman to hold such a position, and she quickly became one of the most respected philosophers of her time. Hypatia's lectures were attended by students from all over the world, and she was known for her brilliant mind and her ability to explain complex concepts in a clear and concise way.
However, Hypatia's success also made her a target for religious extremists. In 415 AD, a mob of Christian fanatics attacked the Neoplatonic school and murdered Hypatia. She was stripped naked, dragged through the streets, and then burned alive.
Hypatia's death was a tragedy, and it marked the end of a golden age of learning in Alexandria. However, her legacy lived on. Hypatia's work in mathematics and astronomy was rediscovered by Renaissance scholars, and she became an inspiration for women all over the world.
Hypatia: The Highest Note is a powerful and moving film that sheds light on a fascinating and important chapter of history. The film is beautifully shot, and the performances are excellent. Honor Kneafsey is particularly good in the title role, and she brings Hypatia to life with intelligence, passion, and courage.
