Early Life

Frederick Douglass was born Frederick Bailey in Talbot County, Maryland, in 1818. His mother, Harriet Bailey, was a slave and his father was a white man. Douglass never knew his father, and his mother died when he was seven years old. Douglass was raised by his grandmother, who taught him to read and write.

At the age of eight, Douglass was sent to live with a slaveholder named Hugh Auld. Auld's wife, Sophia, treated Douglass kindly, but Auld himself was a cruel master. He beat Douglass regularly and refused to teach him to read. Despite these hardships, Douglass continued to learn on his own. He read books and newspapers, and he taught himself to write.

Escape from Slavery

In 1845, Douglass escaped from slavery. He disguised himself as a sailor and boarded a train to Philadelphia. From there, he made his way to New York City, where he found work as a laborer. Douglass quickly became involved in the abolitionist movement. He spoke out against slavery and helped to organize anti-slavery rallies.

Abolitionist Leader

In 1847, Douglass published his autobiography, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave. The book was a huge success and helped to raise awareness of the horrors of slavery. Douglass became a leading abolitionist and spoke out against slavery throughout the United States. He also worked to help escaped slaves find freedom and to provide them with education and job training.

Civil War and Reconstruction

During the Civil War, Douglass supported the Union cause and urged African Americans to fight for their freedom. After the war, Douglass worked to help rebuild the South and to secure the rights of African Americans. He was appointed to the United States Marshals Service by President Ulysses S. Grant and served as the first African American president of the Freedmen's Bank.

Later Years and Legacy

Douglass continued to speak out for civil rights and equality throughout his life. He was a founding member of the NAACP and served as its first president. Douglass died in 1895 at the age of 77. He is remembered as one of the most important figures in American history and his work continues to inspire people around the world.
